Family Day is an official holiday in the state of Nevada, which comes on the day after Thanksgiving, thus coinciding with “Black Friday”.

In Nevada, Family Day is intended as an opportunity for otherwise-busy families to spend “extra” time together, be it at home or out on short mini-vacations. It is also a day when the governor, along with certain county and municipal head executives, issue “Family Day proclamations,” which praise the importance of close families in creating a strong foundation for society.
On Family Day, many Nevadans relax at home, do extra house chores together, have a backyard barbecue, visit relatives, and eat leftover Thanksgiving turkey. They may also watch family-oriented or sports programming on TV, interspersed of course, with numerous Black Friday sales commercials. Others get out of the house and go to local parks or state nature reserves to enjoy the weather together as a family before Winter arrives.
Activities to engage in in Nevada on Family Day include:
- Visit Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area just 15 miles west of Las Vegas. You will see gigantic, red rock-formations, a natural, 3,000-foot-high sandstone wall with intermittent peaks called “Keystone Thrust,” ancient petroglyphs in the canyon, desert tortoises, Joshua trees, Mojave yucca, wild burros, bighorn sheep, and more. Hiking and rock climbing are popular activities, and the sights are unforgettable.
- Visit Carson City, where a number of events occur on Family Day Weekend, including: the annual opening of Arlington Square Ice Rink, special train rides at the Railroad Museum of Northern Nevada, and a Nutcracker ballet at Bob Boldrick Theater.
- Go Black Friday shopping in Reno or Las Vegas. In Reno, go early to the Reno Meadowood Mall for giveaway-treats like hot cocoa and visit The Summit shopping center for the annual tree-lighting event done by Santa Claus himself. In Las Vegas, shopping options are nearly endless, but try Fashion Show Mall for a plethora of boutique shops and also Premium Outlets North and South on each side of the Strip.
While events labeling themselves as Family Day-specific are few, there are nevertheless many special events during Family Day Weekend in Nevada, and nature excursions and Black Friday sales add to the possibilities.
