Illinois’ public holidays in 2018 provide a convenient time during which to explore the length and breadth of the Prairie State.
Illinois will have a total of nine extended weekends in 2018. Besides the usual holidays like New Year’s and Christmas, the “Land of Lincoln” will dutifully observe Lincoln’s Birthday (Friday, February 12th) and Thanksgiving Friday, which is only a holiday in half of U.S. states.
Things to see and do in Illinois in 2018
Among the many examples of popular tourist sites in the state of Illinois to visit on your next public holiday are these:
Starved Rock State Park, where you can take a guided hike of the scenery and learn of the park’s unique history. You can also tour the park via trolley or water cruise, and the Lasalle County Historical Museum displays an impressive array of Native American cultural artifacts.
The Shawnee National Forest, where hiking, biking, fishing, camping, horseback riding, canoeing, and kayaking opportunities await. You can also take a scenic drive down LaRue Pine Hills Road, which straddles the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River.
Tour the town of Rockford, one of the largest and most historic municipalities in the state. You will learn much about the region and its early settlers at the Tinker Swiss Cottage Museum and Gardens and the Burpee Museum of Natural History. And the area has many natural attractions, such as Rock Cut State Park and the Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Garden.
