Iowa recognizes all federal holidays as well as the Friday after Thanksgiving. Although employers are not required to give paid time off, all employers are required to grant time off to veterans on Veteran’s Day as long as the employee’s absence would not cause a significant hardship on the employer.
Employees must provide their employer with one-month notice that they plan to take off on Veteran’s Day and must provide the employer with a federal certificate of release or discharge from active duty that demonstrates they are a veteran. The employer must notify the employee beforehand if they will be paid for Veteran’s Day if they choose not to work that day.
