Iowa Public Holidays 2017

This page contains a calendar of all 2017 Iowa public holidays. Please scroll down to view.

Iowa recognizes the same holidays that the federal government does and all regulations related to employee pay or hours worked on holidays is regulated by the Iowa Workforce Development Department. For some employees, whether or not their employer is required to pay them for work performed on holidays may be confusing.

Iowa Holiday Laws

If an employer has policies, practices or contracts that state they must pay employees on holidays or that they must pay overtime when an employee works on a holiday, they must abide by those agreements. However, if there is no binding agreement or policy in place, an employer is not required to pay an employee if the business closes on a holiday nor are they required to pay overtime if an employee works on a holiday. If the employee works more than 40 hours in a week, whether there is a holiday in the week or not, the employer is required to pay overtime for any hours worked over 40.

Iowa recognizes nine holidays, all but one of which are recognized by the federal government. All state offices are closed and state employees are given the days off as paid holidays. As most in most states, the holiday may be moved to either Friday or Monday if a holiday falls on a weekend.

The Friday after Thanksgiving is a recognized holiday in Iowa. Private employers are required to give employees who are veterans of the Armed Forces time off on Veteran’s Day as long as the employee’s absence would not cause a significant hardship on the employer. Employees must provide their employer with one-month notice that they plan to take off on Veteran’s Day and must provide the employer with a federal certificate of release or discharge from active duty that demonstrates they are a veteran. The employer must notify the employee beforehand if they will be paid for Veteran’s Day if they choose not to work that day.

Iowa recognizes all federal holidays as well as the Friday after Thanksgiving. Although employers are not required to give paid time off, all employers are required to grant time off to veterans on Veteran’s Day. Most employers in Iowa do offer paid holidays as a benefit, however.
